About
Kaia Minn is a 13-year-old student inventor from Massachusetts who is passionate about developing sustainable technologies inspired by nature. Her current work focuses on transforming discarded citrus peels into biodegradable materials for seed protection and reforestation, with the goal of reducing agricultural waste while supporting healthier ecosystems.
Kaia is the inventor of a patent-pending biodegradable seed technology and has been recognized as a Massachusetts State Merit Winner in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, a National Academy of Inventors Genspiration Prize Finalist, and a U.S. National Innovator Challenge finalist. Her work has been featured in the Boston Herald and Inventors Digest.
Driven by curiosity and a love of solving real-world problems, Kaia believes that innovation begins with asking thoughtful questions, embracing failure as part of the process, and using science to create practical solutions that make a positive impact on the world.

What begins with a question can grow into something much larger. Tomorrow Starts Small follows Kaia's journey from a love of nature to the development of a biodegradable seed technology inspired by something most people would throw away.

The Invention
Kaia's invention repurposes citrus peel waste into a biodegradable seed carrier — a low-cost, compostable alternative to plastic and synthetic polymer seed coatings. The peel's natural compounds help suppress mold growth both in the ground and in storage, while the pod's structure is designed to support a higher germination rate than uncoated seed.
It's a small object built to solve a large, unglamorous problem: seed loss to mold and poor germination is a real barrier for gardeners, farms, and reforestation efforts — and most existing fixes rely on plastic and synthetic polymer seed coatings that never break down.
The project began with reforestation in mind: every year, millions of acres of forest are lost to wildfire and deforestation, and the seedlings meant to replace them face their own barrier — mold and poor germination undermine seed survival in the ground and in storage.
Citrus peel chosen for its antimicrobial compounds and biodegradability — turning food waste into a functional circular-economy material.
Experimental trials measured germination rate, mold resistance in soil and storage conditions, and impact resistance of the pod structure.
What started as a reforestation tool turned out to solve the same problem everywhere seeds are grown — Kaia identified applications across farms, home gardening, and community greening initiatives.
